Music
Worship is central to our life as a community, and music is integral to our worship. When we "make a joyful noise unto the Lord," we are spiritually nourished.
Music at St Augustine's is led by two professional musicians, an organist and a choir director, who enable the ministries of parish vocalists and instrumentalists as they enhance our common worship.
Choirs
An intergenerational volunteer choir leads the congregational singing and sings anthems (musical settings of sacred texts) at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Eucharist and other special services. All who are interested in raising their voices in song are invited to join us.
The choir, for anyone in second grade or older (no maximum age limit!) rehearses on Wednesday evenings beginning at 7:15 pm in the choir room (beneath the chapel). Our school age children and youth stay as long as their parents deem appropriate for them. Rehearsal for others is completed by 9 pm.
On Sundays, choir members gather at 8:30 am to rehearse. At 9:10 am, younger members depart for Sunday School or Youth Group meetings. They rejoin the choir when they enter with their friends prior to the exchange of The Peace.
There is no audition required for membership in the choir. We offer on-the-job training in this important ministry. We welcome singles, couples, and families, those who are young in years and those who are young at heart. If you have questions regarding our program, speak to a choir member, a choir parent, or contact Milner Seifert. Here is a link to a page for those parents thinking about a child's joining the choir. Instrumentalists
A variety of parish instrumentalists, in addition to our organist, may accompany the choir or provide preludes to support personal reflection, meditation or prayer. These instrumentalists may be professional musicians, or they may be parish youth who have been studying voice or an instrument and wish to share their musical gifts with us.
Sinfonia
St Augustine's Sinfonia is a group comprised of parish instrumentalists who, together, provide the music for certain occasions, including Thanksgiving Day and the feast day of our patron, Augustine of Hippo (the Sunday closest to August 28). Anyone who has played a musical instrument for at least one year at any time in his or her life is invited to join the Sinfonia!
